Bachelor of Technology in Marine Engineering (MRE)

The B.Tech in Marine Engineering course is the study of the complex principles and practices involved in the running and maintenance of marine machinery which include main propulsion engines, auxiliary engines for electrical power generation, boilers, refrigeration and air-conditioning equipment, varieties of pumps and associated electrical and mechanical auxiliaries, required for the manual and automated operation of various types and sizes of inland, coastal and sea-going vessels, some of which are highly specialized and state-of-the-art. The course follows the syllabus in excess of that as prescribed by the Directorate General of Shipping covering the areas pertaining to ship construction, naval architecture, machine drawing and design of marine machineries. The essence of MRE is that it requires the application of fundamental concepts of Mechanical, Electrical, Electronics, Chemical, Metallurgical, Instrumentation & Automation engineering under arduous conditions prevailing at sea.

Bachelor of Nautical Science (BNS)

A sailor’s ability to navigate a ship on the oceans for making from port to port and along the coastlines of the world is based on his/ her knowledge of Nautical Science. It is the precise study of the principles and practices of operating various types and sizes of vessels, some of which are highly specialized and state- of-the art in Inland waters, Coastal areas and on the high seas, and includes topics such as navigation, ship stability and ship handling, cargo-work, propulsion, and meteorology, to name a few.

TNU is also one of the few colleges in Eastern India that can boast of an in-house, high-tech Ship-in-Campus with advanced bridge simulation facilities. This novel infrastructure facility, built in compliance with international standards house original ship equipment in order to give budding Marine Engineers and Nautical Science cadets a hands-on experience of what a naval career entails. Our ex-cadets have been placed on board ships owned and managed by various shipping companies like, Elegant Marine Services, Wallem Ship Management, Mitsui O.S.K. Lines, MSC Ship Management, United Ocean Ship Management, Gulf Energy Maritime Services (GEM), Wilhelmsen Ship Management, MMS Maritime (MMSI), Apeejay Shipping, Univan Ship Management, Searland Management Service, Herald Maritime Service, etc.MoU signed withDestan Ship Management Pvt. Ltd. (DSMPL)is beneficial for students as it authorizes DSMPL to recruit and place students of Marine Engineering (MRE) and Bachelor of Nautical Science (BNS) on shipping companies. The University is privileged to host faculties, who have distinguished and proven track records as Chief Engineer and 2nd Engineer, Master and Chief Officer of extraordinary merit.

Marine Engineering graduates find challenging job opportunities in national and international shipping companies. The young professionals, who begin their careers as Engine Cadets or Junior Engineers on board ships, rise up the ladder to the coveted level of Chief Engineer, after clearing the competency-examinations conducted by the Directorate General of Shipping in accordance with the Convention on Standards of Training for Certification and Watch keeping (i.e. STCW) of the International Maritime Organization, i.e. the specialized maritime agency of the United Nations.

  • Career Prospects for Bachelor of Nautical Science (BNS)

The Bachelor of Nautical Science degree enables the graduate cadet to become Navigating Officers on board merchant ships plying worldwide. Joining as a Deck Cadet after obtaining his/ her degree after graduation to complete the training process, the career graph then take the cadets through various shipboard experiences and training courses, for finally rising to the coveted level of Captain(Master) of a merchant ship, based on their qualifying the relevant examinations conducted by the Directorate General of Shipping, in accordance with the Convention on Standards of Training for Certification and Watch keeping (i.e, STCW) of the International Maritime Organization, i.e. the specialized maritime agency of the United Nations.
