A sailor’s ability to navigate a ship on the oceans for making from port to port and along the coastlines of the world is based on his/ her knowledge of Nautical Science. It is the precise study of the principles and practices of operating various types and sizes of vessels, some of which are highly specialized and state- of-the art in Inland waters, Coastal areas and on the high seas, and includes topics such as navigation, ship stability and ship handling, cargo-work, propulsion, and meteorology, to name a few. TNU is also one of the few colleges in Eastern India that can boast of an in-house, high-tech Ship-inCampus with advanced bridge simulation facilities. This novel infrastructure facility, built in compliance with international standards house original ship equipment in order to give budding Marine Engineers and Nautical Science cadets a hands-on experience of what a naval career entails.
Placement: 90% of our 2019 pass out batch students of Marine Engineering & Nautical Science have been placed in Destan Ship Management Pvt. Ltd., Apeejey Shipping, MOL, Mercator, ONGC & Ocean Sparkle.

Capt. Diptesh Bhattacharya, HoD & Faculty
Capt. Bhattacharya has 6 years of teaching experience and an overall industry experience of 19 years as the Captain on Ships trading all over the world. He holds a Masters’ (FG) degree from MICS (London). He is a member of the Indian Society for Training & Development. He had been awarded with QHSE (Safety)Awards on his ships in Anglo Eastern Ship Management, Hong Kong. He already has an International Publication on his name along with an International Conference.
Capt. Ranjit Roy, Faculty
Capt. Roy has 11 years of teaching experience and an overall 30 years of industry experience. He holds a Masters’ (FG) degree in Nautical Science. He has attended around 15 National Conferences.
Capt. Subir Kumar Chatterjee, Faculty (Visiting)
Capt. Chatterjee has 2 years of teaching and an overall 37 years of industry experience. He holds a Masters’ (FG) CoC degree in Nautical Science.
Mr. Shyamal Mandal, Faculty (Visiting)
Mr. Mandal has 2 years of teaching and an overall 32 years of industry experience. He is a member of CMMI and holds a Masters’ (FG) in Nautical Science (Marine). He has attended several National Conferences.
Mr. Tamal Mukherjee, Faculty (Visiting)
Mr. Mukherjee has 8 years of teaching and 33 years of industry experience. He is a Fellow of the Institute of Marine Engineers, India, and a member of the Institute of Engineers, India as well. He did his B.Tech in Marine Engineering and he also holds an MOT Class I certification in Motorship. He has 1 National Publication.
Mr. Tapan Kumar De, Faculty (Visiting)
Mr. De has 8 years of teaching and 33 years of industry experience. He is a Life Member of the Institute of Marine Engineers, India. He holds an MEO Class I certification in Motor.
Dr. Kalyanashis De, Assistant Professor
Dr. De has been 8 years of teaching and an overall research experience of 9 years in the field of Condensed Matter Physics. He did his Ph.D. in Physics and is currently involved in a project regarding the effect of A-site sophisticated disorder on the Electromagnetic Properties of ‘A-site ordered RBaMn2O6 (R= rare earth)’ perovskite. He has received several rewards and recognition, some of which are Dr. D. S. Kothari Postdoctoral Fellowship by UGC, Postdoctoral Fellowship by FCT, Portugal, and Senior Research Fellowship by Indian Association from the Cultivation of Science, Kolkata. He has 10 International Publications in his name. Dr. De has been the PI of a project granted by UGC-DAE in the CRS scheme for 3 years (2017-19).
Dr. Ayan Chatterjee, Assistant Professor
Dr. Chatterjee has 2 years of teaching experience. He did his Ph.D. in Mathematics and he has overall 5 years of research experience in the areas of Mathematical Modelling of Contaminant Flow in Groundwater, Mathematical Modelling of Surface Water flow, Geo-Mathematical Modelling, and Transport in Porous Media. He has published 8 Research Articles in International Journals (5 SCI and 3 Scopus) and presented 2 articles at International Conference.
Dr. Manashi Chakraborty, Assistant Professor
Dr. Chakraborty has 13 years of teaching experience and has an overall research experience of 11 years. Currently, she has been working on projects involving Dependence of Exchange Bias on Interparticle Interaction and Improving multiferroicity with RGO/GO/Graphene-based Nanocomposites. She did her Ph.D. in Chemistry and her areas of research have been Synthetic Inorganic Chemistry, Coordination Chemistry, and Nanomaterials Synthesis, Characterization, and Magnetic Properties Study. She has a National and 5 International Publications in her name.

CAREER PROSPECTS
The B.Sc Nautical Science degree enables the graduate cadet to become Navigating Officers on board merchant ships plying worldwide. Joining as a Deck Cadet after obtaining his/ her degree after graduation to complete the training process, the career graph then take the cadets through various shipboard experiences and training courses, for finally rising to the coveted level of Captain(Master) of a merchant ship, based on their qualifying the relevant examinations conducted by the Directorate General of Shipping, in accordance with the Convention on Standards of Training for Certification and Watch keeping (i.e, STCW) of the International Maritime Organization, i.e. the specialized maritime agency of the United Nations. Our ex-cadets have been placed on board ships owned and managed by various shipping companies like, Elegant Marine Services, Wallem Ship Management, Mitsui O.S.K. Lines, MSC Ship Management, United Ocean Ship Management, Gulf Energy Maritime Services (GEM), Wilhelmsen Ship Management, MMS Maritime (MMSI), Apeejay Shipping, Univan Ship Management, Searland Management Service, Herald Maritime Service, etc.
