School of Maritime Studies organized a workshop on “ Internet of Things on Global Maritime Network” at University Seminar Hall SB III on 25th November 2022 which was graced by the presence of Dr. Nabanita Das , Professor Of Indian Statistical Institute , Dr. Prabin Jha , Associate Professor of TNU Robotics and Cdr. Bhaskar Sengupta , Chief General Manager ( Main Works ) , Garden Reach Shipbuilder works .
In his keynote address , Director- SOMS said that IOT has dramatically changed the way we used to live , work and interact with each other.in our daily life , look at the fitness tracker , smart doorbell , smart phones , smart cars – we are surrounded by technologies that are transforming the way we live.
Smart shipping is our unavoidable future and so for a long time career in this industry , it is very much essential that we start getting familiarized with IOT.
Navigation technology has become progressively reliant on information technology, eliminating human error in transmission and thereby improving efficiency manifold.
Dr. Das primarily introduced the basic concepts of IoT and briefly discussed its applications to global maritime networking including maritime communication whereas Dr. Jha focused on needs & challenges of application of IOT on shipboard use . Cdr. Sengupta explained different applications of IOT on modern ship design and how the digital capturing of shipbuilding process from design to production to inspections / test & trials are nothing but building blocks towards the concept of Digital Twin.
The entire workshop was diligently presented by Mr. Tamal Mukherjee including the interaction of the speakers with the audience and ended with vote of thanks by Capt. Saha.
The workshop turned out to be a huge success and we expect to hold many such events in the near future to motivate our students and enrich them with the latest industry technologies.
