About the course

All Women Candidates will receive Rs. 1,00,000 (One Lakh) per year from the Directorate General of Shipping (Maritime Training Trust) during their academic period.

The safety, security, and efficiency of ships depend greatly on the professional competence, discipline, and dedication of the seafarers on board. To achieve these standards, quality maritime education and training—particularly pre-sea training—plays a vital role.

The Diploma in Nautical Science (DNS) is a comprehensive residential programme conducted in accordance with national and international maritime regulations. In India, this course is compulsorily residential to ensure structured learning, discipline, and overall personality development.

The training programme includes:

Academic instruction in nautical subjects
Workshop training and practical seamanship
Boatwork and survival techniques
Simulator and computer-based training
Physical training, parade and Swimming
Team games and sports
Leadership and personality development activities
Various co-curricular and extra-curricular activities

The programme is designed to develop not only technical knowledge and professional competence but also effective communication skills, leadership qualities, team spirit, discipline, and a strong sense of responsibility. Students are trained to cultivate seaman-like qualities, including respect for authority, adherence to maritime traditions, and the ability to work efficiently in challenging environments.

Programme Structure

The DNS course consists of:

1 year of structured pre-sea training (ashore) at an approved maritime institute
18 months of mandatory onboard shipboard training (sea time)

Upon successful completion of the academic training and required sea service, candidates become eligible to appear for the Certificate of Competency examinations conducted by the Directorate General of Shipping, Government of India.

Eligibility Criteria

Valid IMU CET rank or min 40 percentile in state level engineering entrance examination or JEE main.
B.Sc. in Physjcs, Mathematics, Chemistry or Electronics with physics as individual subject in one of the year, with an average of not less than 55% of marks in the final year.
B.E./B. Tech. Degree from L l.T. or from a co ege recognized by AICTE with an average of not less than 50% of marks in the final year.

Step 1:

Sign up /Fill up the Application Form

The student must first complete the Registration/Enquiry Form via the TNU website (www.tnu.in) or any other online platform that provides access to the TNU Registration/Enquiry link. Upon submitting the Registration Form, the student will receive a link via email, SMS, or WhatsApp to complete the Application Form. The Admission Counsellor at TNU will assist in filling out the form. Upon submission, a unique application number will be assigned to the student.

Step 2:

Appear for Admission Entrance Test

All undergraduate course applicants are required to take an admission entrance examination. Once the Application Form is submitted, the Admission Test option will become available on the Student Dashboard. By selecting this link, students can complete the test at their convenience from any location. Students applying for lateral entry into postgraduate courses are exempt from this test. A distinct admission test will be organized for PhD candidates.

Step 3:

Test Results

Within 24 hrs. of Admisison Test, the test results will be available at student’s Dashboard. 40% is the qualifying marks for the test.

Step 4:

Provisional Admission

Following the submission of the Application Form, if the student successfully passes the entrance examination, they may secure provisional admission in their chosen and available course by remitting a fee of Rs.10,000/-. The payment procedure and link are provided above. Upon completion of the payment via TNU’s Payment Gateway, a receipt will be generated and can be accessed on the student’s Dashboard.

Step 5:

Final Admission

After students receive their H.S (10+2) marks and meet TNU’s eligibility requirements for a specific course, they may secure final admission by remitting the outstanding balance of the first semester fee. Once the final admission fee is paid, a UID number will be generated for the student, allowing them to attend classes. The provisional start date for classes is set for August 1, 2025.

What is the qualifying criteria to take admission?

One must score 60% in Class –XII with Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics and 50% in English either in class- X or XII.

Is there any Entrance Test required?

Yes. One has to clear the IMU-CET exam also.

What is the semester fees?

Semester fee is Rs. 99,500/- (Hostel fee is included).

Is there any Extra Fees required?

Yes, There is an onetime Fee is Rs. 62000/-. It includes Admission Processing Fee Rs. 20000/-, Security Deposit Rs. 25000/-, Campus & Establishment Fee Rs.11000/-, University Registration Fee Rs. 5000/- and Alumni Association Subscription Rs. 1000/-.

TNU has the approval of DG Shipping, Govt of India.
