Prof H Shivananada Murthy

Prof. (Dr.) H. Shivananda Murthy is presently serving as Dean and Chair Professor at The Neotia University (TNU), Sarisa, West Bengal. He brings with him an illustrious academic and administrative career spanning 40 years of service across multiple cadres in fisheries education, research, extension, and university governance. Prior to joining TNU, Prof. Murthy served as Dean, College of Fisheries, Mangalore for about two years. He also held the position of Registrar, Karnataka Veterinary and Fisheries University (KVAFSU), Bidar for approximately two years, and earlier worked as Director of Extension at KVAFSU Headquarters, Bidar for a full term of three years. He was a faculty member and later Professor and Head, Department of Aquaculture, College of Fisheries, Mangalore. Prof. Murthy is an alumnus of the College of Fisheries, Mangalore, and obtained his Bachelor’s, Master’s, and Doctoral (Ph.D.) degrees in Fisheries and Aquaculture from the University of Agricultural Sciences, Bangalore. He has guided 44 research scholars as Research Guide in Aquaculture and Biosciences, contributing to high-quality thesis research. He has a strong research background and has served as Principal Investigator for 17 externally funded major research projects in aquaculture and fisheries science, supported by both international and national funding agencies. Through these projects, he brought substantial research grants to the university system and facilitated the creation of laboratories, hatcheries, fish ponds, and other key research infrastructure. Prof. Murthy has authored more than 200 publications, including 148 research papers in national and international peer-reviewed journals, 17 books, and several other scholarly publications. He has undertaken postdoctoral and visiting scientist assignments at the University of Stirling, Scotland, UK; Texas A and M University, USA; and the University of Santiago, Spain. In addition, he has made short-term academic visits to Denmark, Singapore, Norway, the Netherlands, Malaysia, Thailand, France, Belgium, Germany, Switzerland, Australia, Sri Lanka, Hong Kong, and Dubai, among others, for chairing technical sessions and delivering keynote and lead presentations at international conferences. Prof. Murthy is a recipient of several prestigious awards and recognitions for outstanding contributions to aquaculture and fisheries, including the National Jawaharlal Nehru Award of the Government of India, New Delhi; the Sir C. V. Raman Award of the Government of Karnataka; the Best Research Award of the University of Agricultural Sciences, Bangalore; and Overseas Fellowship Awards from the Department of Biotechnology, New Delhi; Overseas Development Administration (ODA), UK; and the International Foundation for Science, Sweden, along with several other honors. He has served as a member of numerous national and international high-level technical and advisory bodies, including the National Committee of the Planning Commission, New Delhi. He is presently serving during 2023–2025 as Member, Research Advisory Committee (RAC) of the ICAR–Central Marine Fisheries Research Institute (CMFRI), Cochin, and earlier served for three years as Member, RAC of the ICAR–Central Institute of Freshwater Aquaculture (CIFA), Bhubaneswar. His earlier roles also include Member, Karnataka Biodiversity Board, Bangalore, and Member, Technical Advisory Committee, Karnataka State Pollution Control Board, Bangalore. He has served on selection committees of the Agricultural Scientists Recruitment Board, New Delhi, the Indian Council of Agricultural Research, New Delhi, and several other universities and organizations. Prof. Murthy has organized 20 national and international conferences and 65 training programmes as Director or Organizing Secretary. He has attended 22 international and 39 national conferences and workshops, where he presented lead papers and chaired technical sessions. He currently serves as Associate Editor, International Journal of Aquaculture and Marine Science, USA, and is a Member of the Editorial Board of the International SDRP Journal of Aquaculture, Fisheries and Fish Science, USA, and the Journal of Aquaculture in the Tropics. He has also served as an office bearer and member of several scientific and professional societies in India and abroad, including as President of the All India Professional Fisheries Graduate Forum, Mumbai, and other professional bodies.
